The route: Cape Coral to Sanibel Lighthouse
Leave your dock or villa and follow the canals south toward the Caloosahatchee River. The river runs roughly west toward San Carlos Bay, which opens up into wider water between the mainland and Sanibel. The Sanibel Lighthouse sits at the island’s eastern tip and is the most common approach point by boat.
San Carlos Bay is generally calm but can get choppy on windy days. Check the morning forecast—if winds are above 15 knots from the west, the bay crossing will be rougher. Most rentals handle it fine, but a pontoon will feel the chop more than a deeper-hull boat.
